I'm taking my computer and going to a motel for several days to work on the novel. Daily life is full of distractions--some sweeet and some not-so-sweet, and I have to find some quiet. I guess it's also a spiritual retreat in that alone, I'll either find my voice or spend a lot of time eating M&Ms.
So, I won't have access to e-mail or the Internet. Should be an interesting experience. I'm not even planning on reading a newspaper.
If the Rapture comes while I'm gone, I'm sure most of my friends will still be here when I get back, but maybe the rest of us can get on with building a peaceful, just world.

Mom and I just met with her friends, and we were discussing writing theory. Here's how to look at it--feed your characters with potential conflicts, and let them react. Then the story should write itself.
Also distract them from things they should be focused on, so you can create some tension between your main plot and the smaller subplots.
Like in Mom's novel she has her characters travelling from one city to another. Travelling scenes have the potential for being boring, but she already has set things up so that her character is not supposed to talk because of his accent would give him away. Then our friend Barbara suggested that someone on the road whose poor could come begging from the group. Just little irritating conflicts that the characters have to cope with pick things up.
Once you establish some key conflicts, the story will write itself.
