On being called a whore

When one posts about the body and the body politic and one happens to be a woman, I guess it was to be expected that someone would call me a hooker. And that others would jump on the bandwagon and make their own comments about my being shallow for arguing that bodies matter. Expected. But it still hurt. Which I guess was the point. Telling women they are whores for speaking their mind is about as old as time, I guess. I tell myself I should be proud to join the sisterhood, and I am, but there's a certain wound I feel today.

If anything, it has given me fuel for my novel writing. After all, if in 2005, I still can't claim myself as a sexually desiring subject without being labeled with sexual epithets, certainly my character from a hundred years ago would have faced the same thing.

I'm not going to provide links to where this has happened. I don't want to give those who set out to wound me with any more ammunition. And I'm trying to forget that people I have trusted have treated my sexual being as suspect. That wound is too raw to even talk about right now, but it hurt more than I can say.

Why can't we live in a world where we respect each other as human beings? I know it's a stupid, rhetorical question. I do. But tonight, I want to claim my self as a woman and my self as a human in the same breath, and it frustrates me, no, saddens me, that somehow, there are still way too many people in this world who cannot accept the humanity--in all its glory--of women.

Without reference to the comment that was made, it's hard to respond - not that you're looking for a response...

From your comment, just let it be known that there are lots of us out there that respect and love women for who they are - and we're not your dad or boyfriend or lover... just normal people, living normal lives who still believe we are normal when we agree that women are sexual, sensual and lovely.

You must have been way too much woman for him! :) I have that problem with guys sometimes. But if you think about it, it's the ultimate compliment. You scared the shit out of him, Lorraine!!!

Unfortunately, rather than leading to a whore level of sexuality, intimidating men (even if it is because they are afraid of their own manhood) makes it infinitely harder to get laid.

Don't feel bad. I scare men too. :( But then I would rather scare them than be submissive.

The real men are not afraid of you though. They don't need to tame you. They don't need to desexualize you. They don't need to compete with you or conquer you, and they don't play hard to get either.

I don't participate at dailykos anymore. I lost interest during the zephyr teachout smear-fest, which was just the final straw in the orgy of group-think and self-congratulatory intellectual incest that passes for political discourse there. But I still read the more insightful people who fight the PC-current and post upstream.

You are among the most insightful of all, and I salute your courage in battling the taboos and insisting on thoughtfulness and consideration. I gave up when my lack of tolerance for religious intolerance made me persona non grata.

Ironically, the real enemy of progress is not the Right - or the Left. The real enemy of progress is irrational, blind faith, whether it be in religious or political or cultural dogma. The real enemy of progress is unquestioned certainty.

Asking certain questions is as taboo on dailykos as it is on LGF, the only difference is in the particular set of taboos.

Until we learn to think, and until we question everything, and until we reach the conclusions each of us reaches about the world based on the uniquely human gift of reasoning, rather than based on what some old white guy in a costume tells us is the correct interpretation of the inerrant truth of some ancient text written when people thought stars were pinholes in the firmament of heaven, until that time when we choose to be human rather than sheeple, we will continue to hate and fear and commit violence on each other.

Thank you for standing up for reason and human values and free thought.

You fight the good fight--and the very volume of mud slung your way is an indication of that very fact.

I can't believe that someone was/is that mean. Wait a minute, I guess I can believe that. There are a lot of hateful people in this world, often known as "The Christian Right" or "Republicans." I'm truly sorry that one of them got to you. In the meantime, take solace. We all like you. We really really like you! :-)

Jerks, morons, and idiots are Gods favorite people or he wouldn't have made so many of them.

When I encounter them there's a part of me that becomes immensely sad and jealous at the same time.

Sad for what they are and the ignorant damage they do, and jealous that they can seem to function almost at the level of human without vital heart muscle and functioning gray matter.
