Fuck your SUV

Maybe you can drive your oversized, gas-guzzling status symbol that FUCKING FLIPS in the snow, up to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and show your children all that pristine wilderness that is now being drilled so you can continue to drive your behemoth. And while you're there, why don't you meditate on the 1500+ dead in Iraq who have died for that same thing you insist on driving.

But, if you want to do something more productive about the vote on ANWR today, here's a damn good idea.

I have to go scream into a pillow now.

Ever notice how whenever this administartion starts talking about drilling in the arctic refuge, gas prices mysteriously go up?

Sideshow Bob, Thanks for posting that. I wasn't sure if I was the only person looking at it that way. For the last six months or more, I've been telling people the reason we have high gas prices is that the POTUS still hasn't passed his "energy plan", and that once he gets permission to drill in Alaska, gas prices will begin to drop. Maybe so, maybe not, but I put nothing past the POTUS.

It is particularly frustrating that there probably isn't enough oil up there to make an impact, it will take years before it flows, and then it will probably be sold to other nations anyway.

I have a suspicion that getting permission to drill in the ANWR has mostly been a political thing to show the environmental movement that we might as well give up on trying to protect the wilds because we can't do anything about it. The government and big oil will have the final say, whatever we do, etc. For me, this is just an invitation to dig in.

Lorraine, I've read most of your posts and I have to say that the more of your entries I read, the more I am convinced that you are actually me. In the future, if you are going to be me, I would appreciate it if you would warn me first. Now I don't know what to do with myself. :-)

I must be really dense, because I can't figure out how you add "places to visit" to your main page. I would like to add your blog, but I can't figure out how. Any help would be appreciated.

It's too bad you live so far away. We could compare our parts and see if we're the same person.

As to code. The way I do html is to cheat. I go to "view" on my browser button (on IE) and then hit "source." Then I scroll through the source code till I see the thing I'm looking for. Then I copy it.
send me an e-mail at lorraine_berry at and I'll walk you through it if this doesn't make sense.

I remember someone telling me that if the gov't told the car companies that they had to increase fuel efficiency by 2 mpg, we would save more oil in a year than we can pump out of the Arctic Refuge.

But, instead, we give people gigantic tax breaks on Hummers. My favourite anti-SUV sign said, "Two soldiers a day die in their HumVee so you can play in yours."

I have to admit I am part of the problem. My Subaru Forester only gets about 22 MPG on the highway and maybe 14-15 in town. We wanted to get a car with full-time four-wheel drive because we live in an area where it tends to get icy in winter and sometimes there is snow with which to contend. And now with two kids getting to be college-age, we will probably have to keep our Dodge Caravan and the Forester until they are paid off, and not get new vehicles for a while once they are actually ours. Ugh. I thought about getting the Prius, and should have gone ahead with it.
